Seated in Heavenly Places: Walking in Dominion

Dr Micah Mitchell

The past 24–48 hours have been a whirlwind—Kerry’s emergency gallbladder surgery left me with little to no sleep. When it was finally over, I was overwhelmed with relief that she was okay, but also with the weight of everything that had just happened. I found myself questioning the uncertainty, wondering how God would show up even more in the next few hours. In that moment, with tears rolling down my face like so many times before, my spirit began to cry out to the Lord, and I began to worship.

In the middle of this storm, as I worshiped, my spirit rose up with a powerful truth:

“Everything is okay. We’ve been here before. We are eternal, and Daddy God has this. You are seated in heavenly places, and you are ruling and walking in dominion.”

In that moment, my inner man reminded me of who I truly am in Christ.

1. I Am His Son, Led by the Spirit

“For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.” (Romans 8:14, NASB)

The Spirit of God whispered to my heart, reassuring me of my sonship. I’m not just someone struggling through life—I am a child of the Most High, a son who walks in step with His Spirit. This identity carries the promise of care, provision, and guidance from my Heavenly Father.

“The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ.” (Romans 8:16-17, NASB)

I know that I am not only His son, but I am a co-heir with Christ. That means everything the Father has given to Jesus, He has made available to me as well. There is no lack in Him, and because I am His, He will take care of me.

2. Seated in Heavenly Places with Dominion

“But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our wrongdoings, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus.” (Ephesians 2:4–6, NASB)

This truth changed everything for me in that moment. I’m not just enduring life’s challenges—I am seated with Christ in heavenly places. From this position, I have authority and dominion over the circumstances I face. That is the place I operate from.

Psalm 8 beautifully captures this reality:

“What is man that You think of him, and a son of man that You are concerned about him? Yet You have made him a little lower than God, and You crown him with glory and majesty! You have him rule over the works of Your hands; You have put everything under his feet.” (Psalm 8:4-6, NASB)

God has crowned me with glory and majesty and given me the authority to rule over the works of His hands. I am not defeated—I am ruling and reigning with Christ, even in the face of trials.

3. Strengthened in the Inner Man

“That He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner self.” (Ephesians 3:16, NASB)

The moment my emotions threatened to overtake me—the relief, the exhaustion, the heaviness of the challenges ahead—it was my inner man that rose up. This wasn’t me summoning strength on my own; it was the Holy Spirit pouring supernatural power into the very core of my being.

The inner man isn’t just a metaphor—it’s the part of us that’s connected to God, eternal and unshaken by the circumstances of life. While my body was weary and my mind was overwhelmed, my spirit was alive and strong, reminding me of the truth of who I am and who my Father is.

Paul describes this beautifully in 2 Corinthians 4:16:

“Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer person is decaying, yet our inner person is being renewed day by day.”

Even when life feels like it’s pressing down from all sides, the inner man is untouched by the wear and tear of the physical world. It is constantly being renewed and strengthened by the Spirit of God. This renewal isn’t dependent on my effort or the circumstances around me—it flows directly from the riches of His glory.

In that moment, I realized something profound: My inner man has been trained for this. I’ve faced challenges before, and every time, God has been faithful to strengthen and sustain me. My spirit reminded me that we’ve been here before, and just as God brought me through then, He would do it again now.

4. Greater Things Will We Do

“Truly, truly I say to you, the one who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do, because I am going to the Father.” (John 14:12, NASB)

In that moment, the Spirit reminded me of Jesus’ promise: I am called to walk in the same authority and power He demonstrated on earth. Because I am His son and co-heir, greater things are not only possible—they are my inheritance.

5. I Set My Mind on the Spirit and Found Peace

“For the mind set on the flesh is death, but the mind set on the Spirit is life and peace.” (Romans 8:6, NASB)

The moment I shifted my focus from the weight of the circumstances to the truth of the Spirit, peace flooded my heart. It wasn’t just the absence of fear—it was the presence of life and power that reminded me, “Daddy God has this.”

I Know That I Am His Son

This entire experience brought me back to one unshakable truth: I know that I know I am His son. My Father cares for me, and He will never fail to provide. Even when things feel overwhelming, I can rest in the certainty that I am loved, seen, and held by Him.

With this confidence, I declare: I am eternal, seated in heavenly places, and walking in the dominion He’s given me. Nothing about this situation is outside of His hands. Everything is okay because I am His, and He is mine.
