Prophecy Is About Declaring the Heart of the Father, Not What You Think or Heard

Dr. Micah Mitchell

Amos 3:7 (NASB): “Certainly the Lord God does nothing unless He reveals His secret plan to His servants the prophets.”

It’s time to draw a line in the sand. Prophecy is not hindsight commentary. It’s not about sharing “words from the Lord” after events have already unfolded, especially following a natural disaster or crisis. This kind of behavior causes confusion and damages the integrity of the prophetic ministry. If it’s already happened, it’s not prophecy—it’s a personal opinion disguised as revelation.

True prophecy comes from the heart of God, declaring His Word before it happens, aligning His people with His plans, and preparing them for what’s to come.
Isaiah 46:10 (NASB): “Declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times things which have not been done, saying, ‘My plan will be established, and I will accomplish all My good pleasure.’”

Prophecy should always line up with the Word of God. Any word that contradicts Scripture is not from the Lord. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (NASB): “All Scripture is inspired by God and beneficial for teaching, for rebuke, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man or woman of God may be fully capable, equipped for every good work.” A true prophetic word will always align with the principles and heart of God as revealed in His Word.

The God Thing Makes Your Baby Leap

When Elizabeth met Mary, the mother of Jesus, something supernatural happened:
Luke 1:41 (NASB): “When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leaped in her womb, and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.”

The God thing causes your baby to leap—it stirs the dream, the calling, and the purpose God has placed inside of you. Prophets and prophetic voices are meant to do just that: release a word at the right time that causes you to shift position even before the birthing begins. You need to surround yourself with people who create these moments, those who ignite the God thing in you and prepare you for what’s coming.

This is why I’m warning you not to chase after every movement or prophetic word. A word out of season will not position you for God’s timing—it will create delays, distractions, and detours. Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NASB): “There is an appointed time for everything. And there is a time for every matter under heaven.” You need the right word at the right time to align you with heaven’s timing and purposes.

Deuteronomy 18:22: A Warning About Presumptuous Words

Deuteronomy 18:22 (NASB): “When the prophet speaks in the name of the Lord, and the thing does not happen or come true, that is the thing which the Lord has not spoken. The prophet has spoken it presumptuously; you are not to be afraid of him.”

This verse provides a critical standard for evaluating prophecy. A true word from the Lord will come to pass as spoken because God is not a man that He should lie (Numbers 23:19). However, there must also be grace, as sometimes prophetic words do not come to pass because of human factors. A person may disobey God’s instructions, misunderstand what the Lord is saying, or fail to steward the prophetic word properly. Prophets are human, and mistakes can happen. This is why we must not rush to label someone a false prophet simply because a word did not come to pass.

False Prophets Are Known by Their Fruit

A false prophet is recognized by their fruit, not just by the failure of a word. Matthew 7:15-16 (NASB): “Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits.” The fruit of their life and ministry—whether it aligns with God’s character and leads people closer to Him—will reveal their authenticity. The Bible also warns us not to touch God’s anointed. Psalm 105:15 (NASB): “Do not touch My anointed ones, and do not harm My prophets.” We must approach the prophetic with both accountability and grace, ensuring that we evaluate words carefully while leaving ultimate judgment to God.

Discerning the Prophetic by the Spirit

You will know true prophecy and prophets by the Spirit. This is the way we are called to receive one another: not by the flesh but by the Spirit. 1 Corinthians 2:14 (NASB): “But a natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned.” In today’s world, many Christians are living more by the natural than the supernatural. When we look for the God thing in people and receive them in the Spirit, the kingdom is established.

This posture allows us to avoid false prophetic words and prophets because we are discerning by the Holy Spirit, not by human reasoning. 1 John 4:1 (NASB): “Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”

When we prioritize the supernatural, we align ourselves with heaven’s perspective, allowing us to see and hear clearly what God is saying through His prophets.

The Spirit of Prophecy: Testifying of Jesus

Prophetic ministry must point people to Jesus, the ultimate revelation of God.
Revelation 19:10 (NASB): “For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.” True prophecy glorifies God, confirms His Word, and prepares His people to act in faith and obedience.

Prophetic Decree:

I decree a restoration of integrity in the prophetic ministry. The Spirit of God is raising up voices who will speak with clarity, foresight, and alignment with His Word. Prophecy will align with Scripture and reflect the heart of the Father. We will discern prophecy and prophets by the Spirit, not by the flesh. As believers walk in the supernatural, the kingdom of God will be established in greater measure. I declare that God’s true prophets will boldly declare His Word, predicting what is to come and preparing His people in faith. Confusion will be silenced, and the prophetic ministry will glorify Jesus alone. The church will be built up, equipped, and aligned with heaven’s purposes. In Jesus’ name, amen!
